Dear United States Government:
Why do you insist on making social policy through tax code? Wouldn't it be simpler to have a system like this:
If you make less than $A: "We're terribly sorry that capitalism has fucked you over, you owe no tax, and perhaps you might like some food stamps?"
If you make between $A and $B: "Keep up the hard work, you're getting somewhere! Please give us %5 of every thing you earned so that we might pave the roads and suchlike."
If you make between $B and $C: "Congratulations! You're in the middle class! Please give us %10 of your earnings so that we might continue such helpful services as making laws and defending the country."*
If you make more than $C: "Wow. You sure know how to make capitalism work to your advantadge. Please give us %15 of your income so that we might run the government and help feed the workers that you're screwing over. Also, would you like to make a campaign contribution?"
This would prevent much weeping and gnashing of teeth. Of course, it would also stream-line a major beauracracy and put a whole bunch of CPAs out of work.
Much loathing,
Evelyn
* It actually took me a minute to think of an essential service that the government provides. Lots of things that I like that they do, but that sentance took longer to write than it should have.
