Happy Birthday Daddy!!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all those who are celebrating today.

Today I give thanks for the blessings in my life. I have a warm bed to sleep in, hot and cold running water, food to eat. I have wonderful parents and generous family. And I have some of the best friends a girl could ever ask for. Thank you all for being in my life.

Today is the 24th Anniversary of the birth of my bestest friend, Kate. Happy Birthday Kate!

No, this has nothing to do with Good Friday. I'm not going to say happy Good Friday, because well, it's the day your god was crucified and not really a happy day (although I suppose it is in the whole "dying for your sins" sense). I will say a slightly belated Happy Passover to my Jewish readers. May you recline at the seder table in Jerusalem next year.

But this has to do with being happy to be at home. I got off work (after putting in a smidge of overtime doing nothing but being on hand in case I was needed). I had, as usual, a pretty good day, though there's some drama with some of my coworkers. But I got a nice big paycheck (30 hours of work), and I had this very cute little girl say "You're very nice" when she got off the tram, so how could that not be a good day? I went to the grocery store after and actually bought more than I'd intended to, but virtually no junk food (except for the candy bars, but what I do is break big bars of good chocolate into servings and then put it in little baggies, and I take that in my lunch for dessert at work). I got pizza for supper, which I've now eaten, and took care of the chocolate and did other prep things while it baked and I watched Jeopardy.
Lynn Rae (the roommate)'s gone for the weekend so I'm not wearing any pants, which is fun, and watching Raiders of the Lost Ark on DVD (it's Lynn Rae's, but it's in the DVD player). So that kind of has to do with Passover, because of the whole Ark of the Covenant thing. Also, I was very amused that there is, in this film, a Snake on the Plane.
Anyway, I'm reminded of why Indiana Jones is on my list of "Sexiest Fictional Characters":
  1. Harrison Ford. Do I really need to say more? Harrison Ford alternately in a tweed three-piece suit and a fedora. And three days without a shave. Thank you, Mr. Speilburg.
  2. He fights Nazis. How can you not love someone who fights Nazis?
  3. He speaks about a gazillion languages. And what girl doesn't love a man who's good with tongues?
  4. He knows about mythology and religion and the occult.
  5. He wisecracks.
  6. He thinks outside the box.
  7. He doesn't leave men behind (unless they're evil).
  8. He's well-traveled.
  9. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty.
  10. The whip. Make of that statement what you will.

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] apopipsqueak!!!!

25 years ago today, my once (and future?) roomie was born. And we are very happy about that. If you should happen to be so lucky as to be in her presence, you should tickle her. If not, just wish her a happy birthday.

Love ya cutie!

Well, that's what Dale calls it. I'm of mixed feelings. I think you shouldn't need a card store to remind you to tell people that you care, and I know how frustrating it is to be single when everything becomes about couples. I also know the stupid pressures the day puts on people in couples to buy things and make a big deal. And the conflation of a weird image of a Roman god and a Catholic saint's day is amusing (really, the story of Cupid and Psyche would be no where near as good if Cupid was a little cherubic thing).

But, for your amusement, I provide you with my ideal V-Day playlists. Including songs about long-distance love, unrequited love, and break-up songs, as well as mushy-gushy love songs. If you're curious to hear any of them, I'll gladly send you a file to preview, but I'll be out all day on Tuesday. This doesn't come any where close to being the full range of love songs I have available to me, they're just some of my favorites.

Since the sun is down now, Happy Hannukah to all my Jewish friends.
I hope those of you who celebrate had a Merry Christmas- I know I did.
Sadly, I didn't manage to get a picture of the OMGWTF face that Smokey made when confronted with the singing turtle I got.
I took a nap while watching Law and Order, since I was up till like 3 AM chatting with [livejournal.com profile] bocceonthelawn last night. Also went to service at [livejournal.com profile] eredien's church last night. We had waffles for breakfast this morning (with OJ in the 12 days of Xmas goblets and milk in Coca-cola Santa glasses).
Theoretically, I now have a webcam, but I don't know quite how to hook it up, but we'll see what I can do (I mean, I know how to connect it to the computer, but not how to get live video to anyone else). Not that any of you are so incredibly bored that you want to watch me on a webcam, but you know.
We're watching Law and Order and I'm adding more songs to my mp3 player. Very Christmassy, huh?

(Anya, Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

We had lots of food today- cheese and crackers, vegetables, turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, bread, cranberry sauce, vegetables, coleslaw, chocolate cake, apple pie, pumpkin pie (which no one ate), ice cream. And it was very good (I didn't eat everything, but it was good). And my aunt gave me a mini Christmas tree and ornaments for my place. The house smelled great. Dad made cinnamon raisin bread in the bread maker, plus the turkey, and we had a fire in the fireplace. The wine and the turkey made me sleepy, but I woke up.
We saw The Ice Harvest today, which wasn't a very good movie, but I love Oliver Platt, and we were the only ones in the theater, so it was still fun.
And I have lots to be thankful for. I love being home- my parents are great (even if I did have to clean the house!), I have a warm dry place to sleep, and I have some of the best friends a girl could ask for. (My parents are plotting to keep me home by not taking me to the airport right now)

For Independence Day, I present to you the lyrics from "Status Quo" from the show, Pins and Needles:
Are you ready to hear your lesson for today? Are you ready to hear what history has to say? Then take your books and follow me, to 1776 AD, and as the history pages turn, we will see what we can learn.
In 1776 Tom Paine was writing books with might and main. A Tory said, "now man alive, stop giving out with this here liberty jive. Don't sing out people's rights that way, they might believe in what you say. So stop your song, it's not polite, pipe down before you start a fight."
Ah, but Tom Paine looked ahead, and to those Tories Thomas said, "No, no, no, no, when you got to go, you got to go, you can't stand still on freedom's track, if you don't go forward, you go back. You can't giddyup by saying "whoa" and sitting on your status quo."
To Washington at Valley Forge, a wise guy whispered, "Slow down, George! Why stir up trouble for the King? This freedom racket is a corny thing. Your troops are ickies, they can't move, you'll never get them in the groove. So if you're wise, you'll just lay low, play with the guys that have the dough."
Ah, but George just looked ahead, and to that Tory Georgie said, "No, no, no, no, when you got to go, you got to go. You can't stand still on freedom's track, if you don't go forward, you go back. You can't giddyup by saying, "whoa" and sitting on your status quo."
Now Paul Revere saw a Belfry light, and that boy rode to town one night, sang to the farmers near and far, "Here come the British beating A to the bar."
One slippery Tory said, "Now Paul, your manners aren't nice at all. Turn back, don't be an old hep cat, the right people don't sing like that."
But Paul Revere turned him down flat! Aha, that's right, he rode ahead, and to that Tory, Paul just said, "When you got to go, you got to go, you can't stand still on freedom's track, if you don't go forward, you go back. You can't giddyup by saying Whoa and sitting on your status quo"
So students, now you're hep don't stop, keep stepping to that freedom hop, although the Tories beat and blow, to keep you sitting on your status quo.
When they say, "let's stand still a bit, give up some rights, no harm in it", remember those are just the tricks that did not work in '76. When Tories talk, don't be misled, and say what all those others said: "No, no, no, no, when you got to go, you got to go. You can't stand still on freedom's track, when if you don't go forward, you go back. You can't giddyup by saying "whoa" and sitting on your status quo."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Kate! For those of you who haven't gotten the memo, Kate is very awesome and fabulous and her birthday is an Imperial Holiday, because I said so.
George Lucas gave her Episode 3 as a birthday present, cause she's just that cool. (Yeah, I know it opens tomorrow, that's just cause he's crazy)

Spent the New Year at Kate's. It was nice. There was a Kate. And a Mandie. And a Dale. And an Albert. But no Gabe. Or Nathanael.
Tried to call the Gabe, but the 800 number didn't work. :(

OK, so, time for Resolutions:
In 2005 I will1:

  1. Eat less junk food
  2. Excercise more- join the GWU gym, and go at least three times a week for swimming or pilates, and yoga
    once a week
  3. Eat more fruits and vegetables
  4. Manage my time better- make sure all my reading gets done, start to work on papers more than 24 hours
before they're due, stuff like that
  5. Meet more people

    1. join All Souls
    2. join the choir at All Souls
    3. go to MSTD, GWU and PBK functions whenever possible (I already do this, but still)

  6. Leave the house at least once everyday (I spend lots of Saturdays in my house)
  7. Cook more, eat less EasyMac and fewer PopTarts
  8. Be on time to work, class and church.

I need to find an internship, but that's not really a "resolution."

1. it's better (they say) to word them positively: "I will do X" rather than "I will NOT do Y" because then you're a) replacing behaviors and b) not criticizing yourself so much. Or something like that.

Birthday = good
Today, I am 22. Went to work, and did nothing productive but re-read several hundred pages of Harry Potter 5. But, courtesy of my birthday, I now have new books to read, including the two Connie Willis books (collections of her short stories) that I did not previously own. Huzzah. And I got 4 new CDs, two of which were on my list, one of which I mentioned I like when Dad mentioned he saw an ad for it, and one I didn't know existed but that I anticipate enjoying thouroughly. And I got clothes. And season 6 of BtVS on DVD, more Huzzah, as it has the episode where Xander saves the World, the end of which I didn't record when it originally aired. And the musical episode. So, life is good. And, yummy carrot cake for my birthday, made by my most wonderful mother. All in all, a decent way to ring in a new year.
Except for the one rejection letter, the cool job that was already taken and the other job that needs someone to start right away, which I can't as that would be an excessive commute w/o a PortKey, appartating, or a transporter. Oh well. There's always waitressing (which I've never done) or hopefully, if I must, working as a hotel receptionist on the night shift (and doing homework at work). We'll see. Going down to the city to find an apartment and look for a job this weekend. Must send e-mails. Please remind me.

That's all. Must shower to rinse the horrid chlorine out of my hair and off of my skin (but God I love water aerobics).
