Why is it that I can find tests I took senior year of college, applications for credit cards I don't want, and all kinds of pieces of paper that should have been shredded long ago, but yet I cannot seem to find the pieces of paper that I actually want?

It's always in the last place you look, even if you skip ahead to the bottom of the pile where you think Murphy hid it just to piss you off.

Perhaps save trees and recycle the old stuff, and help cause global warming and burn the credit card stuff?

I need to sort through it all, that's part of it, and shred what I don't need (including credit card stuff), and file what I do need. I actually have a file system, that's the sad part.
There's also the extreme possibility that stuff got lost in one of many moves. Or that I wasn't paying attention and threw it out because I was overwhelmed by all the paper.
And it's in the last place you look because once you find it, you stop looking. ;)

Get a shoe box for all the tax related papers--even H&R Block recommend this.

well, see, that solves the problem in the future, but not in the past. I can't retroactively do that, and since I've moved 3 times in one year, not everything is where it should be.
