So, today at work someone had the IKEA catalog, which I was browsing through. They had a page of basically an entire bedroom set for under $400. I've gotta move eventually, and it's something I think about, so I thought I should make a list of what I have and what I need. This is mostly for my own reference, but if you can think of something I need and don't have listed, or know that something I'm looking at is crap (or great), let me know.
I have:
A futon (that's actually comfortable)
a chair (good for sitting and such, not a desk chair though)
a bookcase (3 shelves)
a folding tv tray table
3 milk crates
A TV/DVD combo and a VCR
Queen size sheets and a comforter, pillows, towels.
A steamer trunk, suitcases, a plastic tub
A George Foreman Grill
some curtains

I need:
Kitchen stuff: (not including obvious major appliances)
pots and pans (at least two saucepans and one frying pan/skillet)
silverware
plates and bowls
drinking vessels (I have some mugs and plastic cups, so other things are more important).
Knives
a cutting board
measuring cups and spoons
I'm thinking about this for starters.
A Microwave
a dishrack
kitchen towels and potholders
Bedroom stuff:
a bed (mattress really, being more important than the frame)
a dresser
a nightstand (although my trunk works fine as one if I don't need to open it on a regular basis)
other:
a shower curtain
a real couch
a desk
a desk chair
more shelving/storage
a dining room/kitchen table and chairs

I'd like
Tea kettle
tea pot
crock pot
toaster oven
area rugs
a Washer and Dryer

I figure if I move, I could sleep on the futon for a while until I got a bed, so the kitchen things would be priority number one, and then bedroom stuff, and then other rooms as they might exist.

This all being for if you live by yourself? I live by myself and my apartment it too tiny for having a desk and a dining table. I got passed down a table so it is now my desk and I clear it off when I eat at it. Being by myself, that's not very often. Otherwise I eat on my futon or at the crappy bar thingie that is the only counterspace in my kitchen. The system works pretty well, although I hope that next year I live someplace new and have a desk as well. In the meantime I use a filing cabinet and some drawers for dest type storage stuff.

Well, yeah, if I live by myself. And obviously, it depends on the size of the place, and I'm totally up for the notion that pieces of furniture can serve multiple purposes. For a desk, what I really need is a place I can put the printer and external hard drive, assuming I get my old laptop functional again (or buy a new one). I have a tv tray that I could eat at (since that's what it's for), but right now it's serving as my printer stand, and it's also done duty as a TV stand and nightstand.
