So, I'm considering voting for Nader. I live in DC, but I'm still registered in NY, and I plan on voting by absentee. And neither place is battleground. They're both (as far as I know) pretty much in Kerry's pocket already. And I'm not jazzed about Kerry. I'm not jazzed about Nader either, but I like the idea of getting the third party on the ballot, though I've got issues with certain planks in the Green Party platform. Certain things that have come out about Kerry make me wonder. I don't think he's a "flip-flopper" but I think that he may be trying to say what he thinks the people want to hear. But he keeps getting conflicting advice, and so he looks dumb. I like a man who thinks for himself and isn't afraid to change his mind, but I worry that people see indecisive and opportunistic. He's still a better choice than the Moron-in-chief we've got now, and I want him (Kerry) to win. But maybe I'd be doing more with my vote if I used it to express dissatisfaction with the current two-party system and the platforms of those two parties.
It's like ice cream: If they only offered chocolate and vanilla at your local ice cream place, would you go there alot? No, you'd go someplace else, where they had 52 flavors. Since moving's not an option, maybe we can force them to offer us something else, even if it's just a little mint chip...

Sorry I couldn't resist the quote. I think I might have a solution to your dilemma. Many times major party candidates are cross endorsed. I am not sure that is the case with Kerry. You would be able to see that better then myself because you have the ballot in front of you. But you could vote for Kerry on a different ticket to show your dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party. I am not sure that helps because you might be dissatisfied with Kerry himself but I thought I would drop the suggestion.

Good point. The joy of the absentee ballot is the paper ballot and the ability to look at your choices and muse for a bit before sending it back in.
See, you're good for something besides eeping and cuddling.

Have you actually gotten an absentee ballot yet? 'Cause I'm totally still waiting on mine, and wondering whether I'm ever going to get one, even though I sent in the paperwork a long darn time ago.

Okay, it's time to put my two cents in...

First of all, Kristin: you spelled than incorrectly. I don't remember the exact context, but it's meant to be than and not then. Secondly, I think that Kellie can not worry quite so much, since I'm sure that her absentee ballot will come. I can't exactly say the same for mine...
Thirdly, Evelyn, if you saw the "story" on The Daily Show earlier in the summer, there was a thing about young people "throwing their votes away" by voting for Nader. Now, I'm not opposed to it, but apparently, there was this one guy who was a hairdresser, and Steven Colbert asked him what he thought he would have been if he hadn't voted for Nader in the 2000 election. He said he would have been a hairdresser. And I know that I should back up Nader for having had this election headquarters in Amherst, Mass. for the 2000 election, but if you're not going to vote for Kerry, then at least look to someone interesting like the socialist or communist candidate. But review their platforms and plans first, b/c if they want to turn the country into another Laos or North Korea (and end up having the world hating them), then they're probably not worth voting for (if you can find it, and I'll try to help, you should watch the music video for I Want More (Part 2), it was filmed in North Korea, and it contains all sorts of rehearsal and performance footage of this huge pageant. It was kind of cool, and definitely went with the song [whose only lyrics, for the most part were, "I want more"], but it was very visually appealing, and I'm kind of skeptical as to how they got the footage from a country like North Korea, considering that it is communist or a dictatorship or whatever [b/c it's more likely a dictatorship or a whatever, I mean they have a single leader...so it's not really communism, but I think they bill themselves as being communist, much in the same fashion as Cuba does, but the video was cool, I'll see if I can find it, and if I do, I'll post a link on my livejournal.]). And after that, there's always the great standby of Mickey Mouse as a write-in. He apparently gets about 5-10% (I think...) of the vote every four years.

PS: On an interrogative note, what happened with the debate last night? Would someone be willing to fill me in on how it went, please?

Ok, so I'm way late posting this, but I just had to point out that Nader is not currently the Green Party cantidate. He's running as an independant. The Green Party endorses some other guy who's name begins with a C (something short like Clark or Cobb, but I don't remember it). He answered questions from Slashdot.org a while back, and I read that. Anyway, this year a vote for Nader doesn't help the Green Party (although, particularly in a state like NY, it might still be a valid way to say 'I want more real options').

Me, I now live in Ohio, so hotly contested that I quite literally cannot turn on the tv without seeing political ads. I went to a big rally for Kerry yesturday, it was cool. John Glenn was there, and I'm like, omg, i'm in the same room as John Glenn! And 10,000 other people, but still... ;-)

Excellent point. I've already voted (yay absentee ballot), and I voted for Kerry. But not on the Dem. ticket. I think that in total, I voted for one person on the Dem/Rep parties. I've always voted for my congressman on the Working Families ticket, b/c I can't bring myself to cast a vote for the Republicans. And I use the endorsements from other parties as a guide sometimes. I shoulda voted Marajuana reform though...
