But that's a poor lesson plan. I have a Kaplan Audition to be a teacher-person and help people prep for their GREs. But I have to do a 5 minute bit of teaching. It can't be testprep, and it shouldn't be a physical demonstration kind of thing, and should involve class participation. I have an idea, but I'm looking for others. They recommend "How to" or "How" topics, like "How to find an apartment" or "How hot air balloons work" The problem is, I can't think of all that many things I can do, aside from academic things. And I don't think "How to diagram a sentance" is particularly attention-grabbing (well, I do, but most people don't). So, if you have ideas of things I could teach other people in 5 minutes (just the basics), let me know. My one idea so far is "How to keep score at a baseball game" I like it, but my reservations are twofold a)it requires that the students already know at least the basic rules of the game b) it could potentially be boring to people who already know how or don't give a damn. I figure I can do a little poll at the beginning and see if people know, and then teach them the rules, or if they don't need that, do a more "advanced" lesson. Anyway, I'm open to suggestions.

Date: 2004-08-20 10:35 am (UTC)When I did my Teach for America 5 minutes, I did a mini-genetics lesson. The interactive part was having everyone see if they were left or right thumbed, and if they could roll their tongues or not. I didn't get into Teach For America, but I don't think that's why. The rest of my interview was just a disaster for other reasons. Like that I don't believe in corporal punishment and that I didn't think I should be teaching physics.
That's not really a How-To, I know, though. But at least an idea of what someone else did for a similar assignment?
Oh, and I'd find "How to diagram a sentence" fascinating. I used to BEG my grammar teachers to show me how, but they always refused.
